Inaugurated in 2008, the Naviglio Grande museum is a permanent photographic
space that aims to illustrate the role of the Naviglio in the history of Milan and
the neighbouring areas that it flows through, as well as its impact on local folklore
culture. All the photographs, documents and films are arranged into two sections:
the first illustrates the origin of the Naviglio, the architecture along the banks and
the use of its waters for irrigation, navigation and fishing. The second visually documents
its history through the twentieth century. The Museum is housed inside Palazzo
Archinto which stands impressively along the banks of the Naviglio Grande;
architecturally it is reminiscent of a medieval castle with its towers and battlements.
For this reason it has been nicknamed the “castello”.
