Expo is drawing to a close: can we make a quick summing-up?I was there a few days ago for the sixth time and despite the rain I saw loads of people, who were fine, who looked for things and were enriched in doing so. I think this speaks for itself. I put on some music and it stopped raining. What more can you ask?The job of ambassador has a mission. What does this mean to Saturnino?I arrived in Milan in ’89 from the province of Ascoli with a bag full of ideas and a thousand expectations. Milan is a city that feels like mine, basically it has adopted me. Being in the front line of its changes, its epochal events, like Expo, can’t help but give me the energy needed to support a theme like that of Feeding the Planet.Sustainability, environment and food production. Where do you start?A powerful signal is coming from small producers, who favour limited quantities of products so as to be able to guarantee the well-being of those who work in that company and those who put that product on their table. You need to be more caring and informed about food, not waste it and consider food as nourishment, not something to be wolfed down till you’re exhausted. You are one of the most well-loved bassists of all time. How do you handle the pressure? When you take sound around, as I like to define what I do, and you happen to play abroad and see the positive reaction of people it means that you are heading in the right direction. During my seminars at music schools I try to make the kids understand that there is no school of modern music but a language to be studied. You start with a good conservatory, the rest comes later. What kind of diet do you follow when you’re on tour?I decided not to eat any more meat, dairy products or eggs years ago, but in everything else I always overdo it. A month before a tour I simply cut down.A dish you couldn’t do without?Pizza, which I eat without mozzarella, pasta and ice cream made with rice milk.Music, but that’s not all. In your life there’s also room for design. First jewellery and now a brand of glasses. What goals did you set?The idea of the glasses came up by chance, gradually grew and is aimed at always doing better and creating jobs. Soon I’ll resume the tour with Lorenzo around the halls, it’ll take us out of Italy and it’s great to still be in the crazy wake that the stadium tour generated.
